Jump Cups you can make...

Picture

Just a pin, rope, and blocks!
Two 2" x 2" scrap blocks with a hole drilled through, some string, and a 15 cent galvanized nail (with the end cut off to blunt)

...that cost almost nothing!

They work just like regular cups to hold your poles.  The "V" formed by the blocks is just right to hold poles on, but not too tight.

Parts of Home Made Jump Cups

Two 2-inch-long pieces of 2x2" scrap with holes drilled for the rope.

One galvanized spike with the end cut or sanded off.  You could also use carriage bolts.  (See below)

Braided nylon rope, about 1/8", tied in a circular loop.  About 24 inches long.  Burn the ends to prevent fraying.

I ended up painting the blocks by dunking them in thinned paint to protect them and make them look better.

PictureI used 5 inch hex or carriage bolts with with threads on the end. They slide in easily but the threads on the end grip the rope. Also, I like to make the rope a bit longer, then put an extra knot so you can have 2 settings per jump cup without moving the pin. Helps make things level or fit just right above fillers.

I have made my own jump pins (use with standard jump cups or home made) by cutting the ends off galvanized nails or spikes and grinding the end smooth. 10 - 18 cents each!

Jumbo Jump Cup

For holding bigger poles and logs on the cross country jumps, I "upsized" the jump cups using 4 x 4s instead of 2 x 2s.

Same exact concept, just holds the larger poles better.
